When i first turn it on the head was spinning, but as soon as i put it to the floor it stops. Without the head there is suction. Problem is getting worse, last time i tried to use it couldn't get the head to spin at all. Have tried cleaning filters but no difference. It is the same with both the small head and large head.

Hi. Do you mean DC19? Dyson never made a DC09...unless you have the only one!

Sounds like you don't have enough suction to turn the turbo tools. Cleaning the filters is good and presumably you've checked the airways are free? Have you ever sucked up plaster dust/ash etc? That may clog up the cyclones so you might want to try that if you can (not sure how accessible they are on a DC08). It must be a fairly old machine now so a new motor is another thing which may bring it a new lease of life. If you don't have the time/inclination to troubleshoot it all you could always get the Dyson service which should get it running as good as new for £73: http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/repairsandservicinginformation.aspx#tariffs
