Here's an interesting article about the new Air Multiplier. It seem that the basic principal was originally conceived in Japan where a patent was filed in 1981. The patent summary shows a device which does indeed look very similar to the Air Multiplier and seems to work in a similar way too. No doubt Dyson has treaded very carefully in the wording of the patent given that he often talks of fighting patent infringements early in his career, but it will have helped that the Japanese patent has now expired.
